Science/AAAS - New Database Tutorial

New!  The Boyden Library has recently added the Science/AAAS database to our collection.  Science/AAAS provides access to the journal Science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1996 to the present. Also includes Science Express, an electronic publication of selected Science papers in advance of print and ScienceNOW, a daily science news from Science journalists.  View the online Science/AAAS Tutorial

Encyclopedia Americana Online and More: New Library Database

The Boyden Library has recently added  Encyclopedia Americana Online to our database collection. The online Encyclopedia Americana is one of the components of the Grolier Online Database which also includes the following features:
  • Interactive Maps - includes "a camera icon on the map [that] provides a link to "Pictures of Interest" of that area."
  • World Newspapers - links to over 600 online newspapers in over 39 languages
  • Dictionary
  • GoTube Educational Videos
  • Pro/Con Debabe Topics - includes "commentaries and analysis about current events"

This 1969 DA alumnus is the author of two books* that focus upon a famous Boston family. Best known as a broadcast journalist, he also portrayed himself in the film “A Civil Action”. Who is he?

Congratulations to Hadley Newton, our September Library Question of the Month Winner. Hadley correctly answered the question, “Who wrote ... "I'm as corny as Kansas in August ..." ?

The Answer: Oscar Hammerstein II ( 1895–1960). Hammerstein was an American songwriter who wrote the above lyrics for “A Wonderful Guy” one of the songs in the musical South Pacific.

The Library received 2 correct answers and randomly selected our winner by lottery. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Get a Head Start on Earth Day ~ April 22

Earth Day is April 22 and the Boyden Library is ready for the celebration with a newly updated Environmental Issues Research Guide!  This guide showcases the abundance of books, online databases, and websites that provide information on the general topic of environment as well as specific issues like the Green Cup Challenge, climate change, global warming, endangered species, and more.

Question of the Month

Time Magazine recently recommended the debut novel of this 1997 Deerfield Academy’s alumna within its on-going column “The Short List of Things to Do”. A recipient of the 2006 Amanda Davis Highwire Fiction Award , her work has also been published in 2008 Best American Short Stories' 100 Distinguished Stories.

A Letter to Albert Einstein

The Boyden Library February Question of the Month involves a letter to Albert Einstein.

The Question:  A little known fact about this Deerfield Academy alumnus (whose courage is immortalized in a bestselling memoir* and a 1975 Emmy nominated movie* is that he corresponded with Albert Einstein while still a student at DA. Who is this student?
